AI Thread Summary
Struggling with physics and chemistry, the user frequently relies on answer sheets for short-structured questions, expressing frustration over their inability to apply learned concepts effectively. They acknowledge understanding textbook examples but fail to translate that knowledge into assessments. The discussion emphasizes the importance of attempting questions independently before consulting answers, as this fosters genuine understanding rather than superficial learning. Participants suggest that the user may lack foundational knowledge and recommend revisiting core concepts to build confidence. They encourage a relaxed approach, emphasizing persistence and gradual improvement in problem-solving skills. Overall, the conversation highlights the challenges of applying scientific knowledge and the need for a solid grasp of underlying theories.

I keep referring to the answer sheet while doing physics... Help please!?

Hi I'm new here, and I hope to get some advice from you because this site really seems reliable to me, hehe.. so... The problem is that I keep getting stuck on physics short-structured questions and end up referring to the answer sheet every time! ): I really hope I can do the questions by myself but I'm bad in applying what I have learned to the questions and understanding the questions! What should I do! Please give me some advices! Also, this applies to not only physics, but to chemistry too )):

Its probably safe to say that most people find attempting to do a question first before referring to the answer sheet is the best way of learning! So long as you've really thought about the question, perhaps even referred to a book for help first, looking at the answers after is fine. Looking at the answers first and working backwards can result in you fooling yourself into thinking you understand, I've fallen into that trap a few times and its not good.

What do you mean by short structured questions? They like mini-essays with no maths? The more practise the better you'll get at them...

Also, hi and welcome to the forum :) !

It seems you lack understanding of the theory behind the concepts, so I'd hit the books and try and learn that better. Only then would I return to the problems.

Thanks for your replies! :D Short structured questions consists of process skill questions that test a student’s understanding and ability to apply scientific knowledge, and I'm bad at them all! :frown: I think I had tried my best on solving the questions ... but for some reason, I just can't do it! Sigh* Maybe I'm just stupid after all! ): Also, I know how to do the examples in my textbook but couldn't apply them properly when I come to my assessment book ):

Sooo... all physics questions, ever?

Nope, not all.. I could solve those straightforward questions using formulas. I'm also good in multiple choice questions :>
P.s: I quote that definition of short structured question from somewhere because I don't really know how to explain.. :}

Can you stop doing so many smilies?

You have been repeating the same perception that you have attained that limits you. Its becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Relax and gather your thoughts together. Go back over the concepts slowly and make sure you understand them. Now when you go back to the problems take as much time as needed, persistence is key. Sooner or later, it will all click together.
