Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around identifying rocks collected from Lake Luzerne, focusing on the visual characteristics of the rocks as presented in photographs. Participants are attempting to classify the rocks based on their appearance and the quality of the images provided.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested, Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests help identifying rocks, sharing links to images for reference.
  • Another participant notes the images are too blurry to make a clear identification.
  • Some suggest the rocks could be granite, but express uncertainty due to the image quality.
  • One participant attempts to clarify by providing a comparison image of granite.
  • A later reply mentions the possibility of the rocks being Quartz Monzonite, citing the presence of k-feldspar and the absence of quartz, while acknowledging that lighting may affect the appearance.
  • Participants discuss the need for clearer images, suggesting that taking a step back might improve focus.
  • There are repeated mentions of issues with image display, indicating technical difficulties in accessing the provided links.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that the images are not clear enough for definitive identification, and multiple competing views about the rock types (granite vs. Quartz Monzonite) remain unresolved.

Contextual Notes

The discussion is limited by the quality of the images and the subjective nature of visual rock identification, which may depend on lighting and photographic technique.

A bit too blurry for me, but perhaps that's just my eyes.

Could be granite, but the pics are way too blurry to tell.

Yeah, it's a bit blurry because I took the picture off of my webcam so I apologize for the picture quality.

It's particularly the second picture I think looks a bit like granite, but I can't really tell. If it is, I'd think it would look like this: http://www.lewis-clark.org/media/NewImages/VIEWS/geol_granite-gray-hyndman.jpg

I got an overhead shot of it and reduced the brightness. I hope this helps.

I added the picture onto the original website I posted. It's the third picture down.

Let me know if you have any problems accessing it.

Since the books in the background are in focus and the rock isn't maybe if you take a step back, you can get a sharp picture of the rock. Just a thought.

Looks like a possible Quartz Monzonite to me. Seems to be a fair bit of k-feldspar and lacking in Qtz. That could just be the lighting in the photo however.
