Increase Laser Power out of fiber optic

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around increasing the power output of combined laser beams from an optical fiber, specifically in the context of creating artificial white light. Participants explore various methods and configurations related to optics and fiber coupling.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant is combining three laser beams (green, blue, yellow) to produce artificial white light and seeks ways to increase the output power from 1 mW.
  • Another participant requests additional information, such as drawings or schematics, to better understand the setup.
  • A participant provides a rough sketch indicating the use of prisms and suggests that placing a lens between the second prism and the optical fiber might help focus the light, though they express uncertainty about the significance of the potential increase in power.
  • Claude suggests making the red, green, and blue beams colinear before focusing them into the fiber and mentions that a 20x objective works well for single-mode telecom fiber, while a lower magnification objective could be suitable for multimode fiber.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants have not reached a consensus on the best method to increase the power output, and multiple approaches are being discussed without resolution.

Contextual Notes

The discussion lacks detailed specifications about the laser types, fiber characteristics, and the exact configuration of the optical components, which may affect the proposed solutions.

I am working on a project and am combining three laser beams in an effort to make artificial white light out of the end of the fiber. It is currently producing about 1 mw of power. How could I increase the power out of the end of the optical fiber?

Could you please give us more information? Some drawings or schematics?

Here is a rough sketch. The ellipses the lasers are going through represent prisms. The thicker line where the lasers (green, blue, yellow) meet represents the optical fiber. I thought about placing a lens of some sort between the second prism and the optical fiber to focus the light more but not sure if that will increase the power a significant amount.

I would try making your red/green/blue beams colinear before focusing them into the end of a fiber. I've found that a good 20x objective works best for standard single-mode telecom fibre; a lower mag objective can be used if the fibre is multimode.

Claude.
