I am recent undergraduate with a B.S in Astrophysics. I was looking at getting a PhD in planetary science, but curious what type of industry jobs are available. I'm not interested in working in academia.
There are a variety of industry jobs available for planetary scientists, including positions in aerospace companies, government agencies (such as NASA), research and development firms, and consulting firms. Planetary scientists can also work in the private sector, for companies that specialize in space exploration or technology development.
To work in industry as a planetary scientist, you typically need a degree in a related field (such as astronomy, geology, or physics), as well as experience with data analysis, computer programming, and remote sensing techniques. Additionally, strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills are essential for success in this field.
The salary range for industry jobs as a planetary scientist can vary greatly depending on the specific job, location, and level of experience. However, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for geoscientists (which includes planetary scientists) was $92,040 in May 2020.
The specific job duties for a planetary scientist in industry can vary depending on the company and position, but some common tasks may include conducting research and data analysis, developing and testing new technologies or instruments, collaborating with other scientists and engineers, and presenting findings to stakeholders or clients.
As a planetary scientist in industry, there are many potential career advancement opportunities. Some options may include taking on leadership roles within a company, pursuing higher education (such as a master's or doctoral degree), or transitioning to a different industry or sector, such as academia or government.
