SUMMARY

The absorption cross section for an H-alpha photon interacting with a neutral hydrogen atom in the n=2 state is a critical parameter for various scientific applications. Users recommend the NIST database as a reliable source for atomic information, specifically for obtaining values related to absorption cross sections and transition probabilities. The NIST database can be accessed at http://www.nist.gov/pml/data/asd.cfm, where detailed atomic data is available.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of atomic physics concepts, specifically hydrogen energy levels.
  • Familiarity with absorption cross sections and their significance in spectroscopy.
  • Knowledge of the NIST database and its application in retrieving atomic data.
  • Basic skills in interpreting scientific data and transition probabilities.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the specific absorption cross section values for hydrogen using the NIST database.
  • Explore the concept of transition probabilities in atomic transitions.
  • Study the implications of absorption cross sections in astrophysics and spectroscopy.
  • Learn about the different states of hydrogen and their relevance in quantum mechanics.
USEFUL FOR

Researchers, physicists, and students in atomic physics, particularly those focused on spectroscopy and the behavior of hydrogen atoms in various states.

Hydrogen - Halpha cross section
i need the absorption cross section for the absorption of an H-alpha photon by a hydrogen atom, in the correct state of course, which I'm pretty sure is neutral hydrogen, n=2.
I am needing this for a project, so i also need a reliable source where this comes from.
Thanks beforehand and friendly regards,

I don't have the value for you, but I usually use the NIST database for atomic information. Try at http://www.nist.gov/pml/data/asd.cfm , the Lines section appears to have also transition probabilities.
