Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the integration of the function 1/x^(1+a), exploring methods and potential errors in the integration process. It includes aspects of mathematical reasoning and technical explanation.

Discussion Character

  • Mathematical reasoning

Main Points Raised

  • One participant seeks assistance with the integral of 1/x^(1+a) and mentions difficulties with substitution.
  • Another participant suggests that substitution may not be necessary and prompts consideration of the integral of x^p, indicating a potential approach.
  • A later reply indicates a result of -(x^-a/a), questioning its correctness.
  • Another participant adds a note about including a constant of integration, C.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion includes varying approaches to the integration problem, with no consensus on the correctness of the proposed solutions or methods.

Contextual Notes

Participants do not clarify the assumptions regarding the constant "a" or the conditions under which the integration is performed.

I need help getting the integral of

1/x^(1+a)

I tried using substitution but it didnt work.
I keep getting x/a. Could someone show
me what I am doing wrong.

I take it "a" is a real constant? Substitution is not necessary. Do you know the integral of x^p (where p is a real number)? Do you see how it can be applied here?

Oh I see

now I got -(x^-a/a)

is this correct?

+ C of course ;)

Thank You!
