SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the charge of the Earth, with conflicting information regarding whether it is positively or negatively charged. Sources from NASA suggest that electrons from clouds move to the ground due to the Earth's positive charge, while other sources indicate that the Earth is negatively charged. Ultimately, it is established that the Earth, when considering the entire system including the atmosphere, is generally regarded as electrically neutral.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic electrical charge concepts
  • Familiarity with atmospheric electricity
  • Knowledge of electron behavior in electric fields
  • Awareness of scientific sources and their credibility
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of atmospheric electricity and its effects on weather phenomena
  • Explore the concept of electrical neutrality in large systems
  • Investigate the role of lightning in charge distribution
  • Study the interactions between clouds and the Earth's surface in terms of charge transfer
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for students of physics, meteorologists, and anyone interested in the principles of electricity in natural systems.

i read from this site http://thunder.msfc.nasa.gov/primer/primer2.html that electrons from lower portion of clouds goes to ground beacuse of Earth's positive charge...

but the below two sites tell that Earth is negatively charged...
http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives...2284.Es.r.html
http://www.nuenergy.org/alt/earth_charge.htm

which one is correct?..is Earth positively charged or negatively charged?

both are

see the Earth as a whole (including atmosphere) is generally thought to be neutral in total

while the lightning page is looking at the Earth only and not the atmosphere.
