The discussion centers around the waterproofing of the iPhone mute button, specifically its mechanism and functionality. Participants explore the nuances of waterproof versus water-resistant classifications in various iPhone models and seek to understand the design of the mute switch.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the mechanism of the iPhone mute button and requests a drawing to illustrate it.
  • Another participant references a related thread and asks what the original poster has found through their research.
  • A participant mentions finding articles on waterproofing in phones but expresses confusion about the mute button's mechanism based on available photos.
  • Some participants clarify that iPhone models are described as "water resistant" rather than "waterproof," indicating a lack of knowledge about specific models and their classifications.
  • There is a mention that models prior to the iPhone 6 are water resistant, while the iPhone 7 is noted as waterproof, raising questions about the internal design of the mute switch.
  • Links to external resources are shared, but some participants encounter access issues due to regional restrictions.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express uncertainty regarding the waterproofing status of different iPhone models and the specific design of the mute button, indicating that multiple competing views remain without a clear consensus.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations in the discussion regarding the definitions of "waterproof" and "water resistant," as well as the specific models of iPhones being referenced, which may affect the understanding of the mute button's mechanism.

@berkeman I found that there are few good articles explaining about waterproofing in phones. I tried to analyse button mechanism from the photos, which we can easily find in google. But I still don't get it, trying to figure out... any ideas?

I only did a quick Google search and clicked into a couple of the hits. They point out that some iPhone models are "water resistant" (not waterproof), and I didn't know enough about the various models to know if the mute switch you mention is one one of the water resistant models or not.

Which iPhone?

Although it seems simple, "waterproof" is actually subject with a lot of nuance.

Till the model 6 it's water resistant after that, for example model 7, it's waterproof. It would really interesting to see that's inside of it.
