SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the distinction between a "physics pendulum" and a "physical pendulum." The user seeks clarification on whether they can apply the formula T=2π√(Θ/mgd) for calculating small oscillations around the equilibrium position of a physical pendulum. A suggestion is made to derive the equation of motion using F=ma to better understand the system's dynamics and validate the use of the formula.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of physical pendulum dynamics
  • Familiarity with the formula T=2π√(Θ/mgd)
  • Knowledge of Newton's second law (F=ma)
  • Concept of moment of inertia
NEXT STEPS
  • Derive the equation of motion for a physical pendulum
  • Explore the concept of moment of inertia in detail
  • Study the effects of damping on pendulum motion
  • Learn about the applications of physical pendulums in real-world scenarios
USEFUL FOR

Students and educators in physics, mechanical engineers, and anyone interested in the dynamics of oscillatory systems.

I have to calculate the small oscillations around the equibrillum position. My question is only that is this a physics pendulum so i can use the formula T=2\pi\sqrt{\Theta/mgd} , where d is the distance of the mass centre and the pivot and \Theta is the moment of inertia of the pendulum about the pivot point.
So is this a physics pendulum?
Thx for help

The question I think you really want to be asking is, "Is this a PHYSICAL pendulum?" The difference is the word "physical" in place of "physics."

Rather than ask that, why don't you simply write out the equation of motion for this system, starting with F = m a for this system, and find out if it comes down to that formula? That would be a lot more interesting and useful.
