SUMMARY

Wavelength doubling is not a recognized technique; the correct term is frequency doubling, which effectively halves the wavelength of light. This process is commonly utilized in green laser pointers through second harmonic generation. The discussion highlights parametric down conversion as the inverse process of frequency doubling. For further understanding, resources such as RP Photonics and Wikipedia provide detailed explanations of these concepts.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of frequency doubling and second harmonic generation
  • Familiarity with laser technology and its applications
  • Knowledge of parametric down conversion
  • Basic principles of optics and light behavior
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of frequency doubling in laser technology
  • Explore the applications of second harmonic generation in various lasers
  • Study parametric down conversion and its uses in quantum optics
  • Investigate the efficiency metrics of frequency doubling processes
USEFUL FOR

Optical engineers, physicists, and anyone involved in laser technology or photonics will benefit from this discussion.

I've heard of frequency doubling but is wavelength doubling a thing? If so, how efficient?

Frequency doubling divides the wavelength in half: http://www.rp-photonics.com/frequency_doubling.html

The inverse process also works, and is usually called parametric down conversion:

Your green laser pointer is an example of frequency doubling/second harmonic generation:

See the schematic diagram on the right hand side - enlarge, and follow the red beam into the crystal which generates the green beam.
