SUMMARY

The forum discussion focuses on constructing a vehicle for a physics class project that must travel at least 5 meters using stored potential energy without chemical reactions or slingshot methods. Key suggestions include utilizing a Folgers coffee can as the vehicle body, incorporating a rod for structural integrity, and employing a spring mechanism to convert potential energy into kinetic energy. Additionally, participants emphasize the importance of using smooth tires to minimize friction and designing the vehicle to reduce air resistance for optimal performance.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of potential and kinetic energy principles
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical design and construction
  • Familiarity with friction and air resistance concepts
  • Experience with simple machines, particularly springs
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the mechanics of spring energy storage and release
  • Explore designs for minimizing friction in vehicle construction
  • Investigate aerodynamic principles to reduce air resistance
  • Learn about materials suitable for lightweight vehicle construction
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for students in physics classes, educators seeking project ideas, and anyone interested in mechanical design and energy conversion principles.

Ke/pe Vehicle Help!

we have to construct a vehicle for physics class that can travel the greatest distance possible. the energy must be stored "in" the vehicle as potential energy, and must have a 'rolling' aspect. we cannot use any chemical reactions or slingshot methods. it must travel atleast 5 meters.

i have absolutely no idea what to do. some people have told me something about using a folgers coffee can and putting a rod through it, but I'm still so confused. any ideas and how to construct it would save my life. and my grade!

A spring would be ideal. It would store potential energy, and once released it could release all of its energy into kinetic energy. In order to reduce friction use tires with no grooves. Make the car ain such a way that air resistance can be minimized.
