LaTeX is favored for its professional appearance and extensive formatting capabilities, making it a standard for scientific publications, while MathType offers a user-friendly interface for creating equations quickly. Users appreciate LaTeX's plain text format and portability across platforms, though it requires a learning curve for effective use. MathType, while not identical to LaTeX in style, provides templates and point-and-click functionality that some find faster for document creation. LyX is highlighted as a WYSIWYM editor that simplifies LaTeX usage without sacrificing its power. Ultimately, the choice between LaTeX and MathType depends on the user's specific needs, document complexity, and willingness to invest time in learning.

Also, I'd like to just add that the majority of equations I put into latex, I just write up in mathematica (very quick) and copy as LaTeX (theres also a MathML copy) and just paste it into LEd. Saves a lot of time.
