Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the availability of bar-graph LEDs with built-in flip-flops (FF) for latching values. Participants explore the need for such components and alternatives, focusing on both existing products and potential solutions.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the existence of bar-graph LEDs with a built-in flip-flop to hold values until an enable signal changes.
  • Another participant mentions having seen LEDs with built-in resistors and displays with built-in latches, but not individual LEDs or bar graphs with latches, suggesting low demand for such features.
  • A participant expresses interest in LED displays with built-in latches and requests part numbers or keywords for searching.
  • Another participant references older HP hex displays that had built-in decoder/driver/memory features and suggests searching for them on Digikey, noting their high cost as a potential reason to consider alternative solutions.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the availability of bar-graph LEDs with built-in flip-flops, and multiple views on the existence and demand for such components are presented.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the demand for specific LED features and the availability of components are not fully explored, and there may be limitations in the search terms provided.

Does anyone know if there is such a thing?
I need a bar-graph LED with a FF built-in. The only ones I could find on digikey is a regular 10-diode LED, but I need something that would latch or hold that value until the enable changes... I could use a regular one in combination with a D-FF, but it would be nice to have something internal instead.

Thanks in advance...

I've see LEDs with built-in resistors, and LED displays with built-in latches, but not individual LEDs or bar graphs with built-in latches. I don't think there's much demand for that function.

I guess LED display with a built-in latch might work... Do you happen to know a part-number or what key-word I should search for to find it?
Thanks, berkeman

The old HP HDSP-07xx and -08xx and -09xx hex displays had a built-in decoder/driver/memory feature (another vendor makes them now). Just go to Digikey.com and do a search on HDSP-0, to get a list of the ones they carry. They're dang expensive though, so that may motivate you to brew your own with separate logic after all.
