SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the construction of a Leyden jar intended for charging via a Van de Graaff generator. Users express confidence that using spray adhesive on the inner foil layer will not impede the jar's functionality, as the glass jar serves as the dielectric material. However, participants emphasize the importance of safety, noting the potential dangers associated with Leyden jars, including the risk of fatal accidents.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Leyden jar construction principles
  • Familiarity with Van de Graaff generators
  • Knowledge of dielectric materials and their properties
  • Awareness of electrical safety protocols
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the properties of different dielectric materials for Leyden jars
  • Learn about safe handling practices for high-voltage experiments
  • Explore alternative methods for securing foil layers in Leyden jars
  • Investigate the effects of various adhesives on electrical conductivity
USEFUL FOR

Electronics enthusiasts, hobbyists building Leyden jars, and individuals interested in high-voltage experiments and safety precautions.

im making a large leyden jar to be charged from a van der gaaf generator. does anyone know if i use spray adhesive on inner foil layer to hold it in place will it affect the way it works? or stop it working?

I don't think the adhesive will affect operation. The glass jar provides the dielectric.

Do be extremely careful. Many deaths have resulted from playing with Leyden jars.
