Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding an introductory book on materials science suitable for a high school student with basic knowledge of physics and chemistry. Participants explore the accessibility of the field and the prerequisites necessary for studying materials science.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses interest in materials science but questions whether their basic understanding of physics and chemistry is sufficient to study the subject.
  • Another participant suggests that the term "Materials Science" may be contradictory given the educational background mentioned.
  • A third participant mentions flipping through a book by Callister, implying it might be a suitable resource.
  • A later reply reiterates the concern about the vagueness of the initial question and seeks guidance on acquiring the necessary background knowledge for materials science.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the suitability of studying materials science with only basic knowledge, and there are differing views on the accessibility of the field.

Contextual Notes

Participants express uncertainty about the prerequisites for studying materials science and the adequacy of existing resources for someone with a limited background.

"Materials Science?" Bit of an "oxymoron," wouldn't you think?

I just flipped through its pages, but... Callister, maybe?

sorry if my question is vague, but I only have high school level understanding of sciences, but I'm interested in materials science and would like to learn more, so if with my knowledge it's not possible to actually study materials science, could you point me where I could go to get some background knowledge needed for it?
