Men: How Would You React to Being Contacted Out of the Blue?

The discussion centers around the reactions of individuals when contacted unexpectedly by a woman expressing admiration for them. Initial responses include feelings of flattery mixed with suspicion, particularly regarding how the woman obtained their email address. Public figures note they often receive such messages, which can feel overwhelming or even creepy, depending on the approach and content of the email. Many participants agree that the context and tone of the message significantly influence their reactions; a well-crafted email referencing shared interests or work is more likely to be welcomed than a vague compliment. Some express that if they were single, they might be more open to engaging, while others emphasize discomfort, especially if the message is overly focused on physical attraction. The conversation also touches on the challenges of online communication, where initial impressions can be easily misinterpreted. Ultimately, there is a consensus that while such outreach can be flattering, it often requires careful consideration of how to approach the recipient to avoid coming off as strange or overly forward.

How would you feel about a woman e-mailing you with no prior contact?

Let's face it, I'm too laid back to be a successful stalker. :frown: I guess I will just abandon the whole idea of contacting him.

I had this general outline in my head where you and David would hit it off, and David would come to Kansas with you. And while he was here, he would give a lecture at say, Exploration Place or the Cosmosphere and I'd get a chance to meet him in person, maybe even have a sip of tea. Alas, 'tis would have been pretty memorable.

Any woman who emails me out of the blue has got to be crazy. She will soon find out that there is only one woma, other than mom, who can put up with me and she has been doing it for 20+ years.

Facebook is excellent for stalking. If you're on the same network as the stalkee, that is. There's women there posting private information who wouldn't give me the time of day. It's almost boring how easy it is.

On second thought, I am wounded and need something to do...

Okay, what should I say? I need suggestions. If it was me I'd just write "I think you're fascinating and cute". Oh wait, it is me.

Why are the two last options even listed? How would anyone ever know through an e-mail?

I think personality comes through in writing, at least it does to me. Also, if you have pictures, then you can tell something about appearance.

ask him, that if you sent him your (well read) copies of his books, would he mind inscribing and signing them

If I'm not mistaken signed copies of his book had a higher price and the money was donated to the children's foundation he supports.

Evo,

Well, you could ask if he would sign a few books to be auctioned on E-bay or some such with the proceeds going to a worthy organization or cause. This would allow you to add something about yourself so he would know you're not a flake or fraud. A link to a bio and picture under your signature perhaps? I have no doubt a few members might help you along by donating books that are in excellent condition. A win-win proposition if he's inclined to sign them.

edit to add: You can still express your admiration for him in the note. Btw, the other person in that picture looks like his son.

Or, you could simply say: Hello, I find your as interesting as your work. It takes two to Tango, care to Waltz?

Edit to add: if he's single

Is this what sparked your interest, Evo?:

David Deutsch at the University of Oxford and colleagues have shown that key equations of quantum mechanics arise from the mathematics of parallel universes. "This work will go down as one of the most important developments in the history of science," says Andy Albrecht, a physicist at the University of California at Davis.

You do understand, Evo, that if you do contact him, and he gets to know you, this whole thread will be wide-open? I have saved a copy for future leverage, in case it is necessary.:biggrin:

A local company could sponsor a colloquium in Quantum Computing at the local university in conjunction with the mathematics, physics and chemistry departments and perhaps other universities in the area. Invite DD as the keynote speaker. Then interested parties could meet DD.

This guy would be interested -

Ooh, man! You're as devious and clever as the best of them. Could politics be in your future? I hope that you will not align yourself with the dark side of the force... the Emperor and Darth Vader (R&C) need no more help.

I'm just practical.

I'm not sure about politics. I don't like wearing suits, and I prefer to go barefoot.

On the other hand, I like rolling up my sleeves and getting things done. Then again, I prefer shirts without sleeves.

If one includes a picture with the email, one with a smile would be nice.

I hear you. I wear shoes mainly because I do stuff that can cause cuts/damage to my feet. I don't own a suit, a sports coat, or a tie. There's no possibility that I will ever go anywhere that these are required, so I practically live in T-shirts, jeans, and the occasional flannel/fleece shirt when it's really cold outside. When I was running open-mike jams at local taverns, much of my clothing costs were taken care of, because beer vendors would ask to run specials at the jams and provide me with free T-shirts, sweatshirts, etc.

I would certainly wear a suit (with shoes) for any member of the PF sisterhood - but that is about the only time.

I can't imagine any time that you might need to dress up for the sisters, unless you needed to crash a wedding (reason unspecified). I think most of the sisters would accept us as we are, absent the need for the undercover work. Certainly, MIH, Moonie, Evo, and Tsu might be willing to overlook our lack of social sophistication in return for some salsas or chili relishes. You've got to haul some of your frozen chilies out of the freezer and experiment with them. The heat will set you free!

I think you should send him a singing telegram. If you'll fly me there, I'll deliver the musical message in a bear suit and tap shoes.

Would you? I think that is my answer! I'll even bail you out of jail when the police pick you up.

Maybe some clever lyrics...

"She may be cute, but she can't compute - that's Evo."

Common, I know you science guys can come up with some lyrics.

It should be something toe-tapping, with maybe an accordian.

Oh, and maybe mention that I can make a knife and spear head out of a harmonica.
