SUMMARY
Tanzania's foreign minister, Asha-Rose Migiro, has been appointed to the position of Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. At 50 years old, Migiro is recognized as a highly respected leader and outstanding manager, particularly noted for her advocacy for the developing world. She made history as Tanzania's first female foreign minister in January 2006 and becomes only the second woman to hold the Deputy Secretary-General role, a position established by Kofi Annan and first occupied by Louise Frechette.
