Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the specifications needed for a laptop suitable for an undergraduate program in electrical and biomedical engineering. Participants explore the requirements based on specific software applications that will be used during the course of study.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests minimum laptop specifications without providing details on software requirements.
  • Another participant emphasizes the importance of knowing the specific software needed before determining laptop specifications.
  • A participant lists software applications including PSpice, Matlab, Quartus II, and Solidworks that will be used in the engineering program.
  • One comment suggests that a laptop may not be sufficient for the listed software, proposing a high-end desktop configuration instead.
  • Another participant agrees that a desktop might be preferable for better screen real estate but also mentions a high-end laptop option (Alienware M18x) for those who can afford it, highlighting its features and potential drawbacks.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing opinions on whether a laptop is adequate for the required software, with some suggesting a desktop is better while others propose high-end laptop options. No consensus is reached regarding the minimum specifications needed.

Contextual Notes

Participants do not specify the exact requirements of the software listed, which may influence the discussion on hardware specifications. There is also a lack of clarity on the user's budget and preferences.

Who May Find This Useful

Students entering engineering programs, particularly in electrical and biomedical fields, may find this discussion relevant when considering laptop specifications for their studies.

No, because you do not provide any useful information. Find out what software you'll need to run and go from there.

i will be using
PSpice
Matlab
Quartus II
Matlab
Solidworks

OH NOES! A laptop won't do the job.
You will need a quad core i7 computer with about 50 gigs of ram and 200 Tb of HD to do that.

You might even need one of these

In all seriousness, almost any laptop will do the job you need. Running CAD from a laptop is crappy at the best of times, and won't make a blind bit of difference what laptop you run it on (within reason).

Just buy the best you can afford.

I agree with xxChrisxx

A desktop would be preferable if not just for more screen real estate. UNLESS...

You are loaded in which case you should take a look at the new Alienware M18x. It is a beautiful peace of hardware with a big screen and a graphics card (or two if you feel so inclined) to power a big *** monitor alongside the generous 18.4" of the laptop itself! One problem. You'll probably spending a lot of time at the chiropractor with back problems since it weighs a more than hefty 5.41KG. And incidentally a visit to your bank manager wouldn't be a bad move either with prices starting at an eye watering :bugeye: £1698.99
