Neutron Stars mass and radii observation data

SUMMARY

This discussion focuses on the challenges of plotting neutron star mass-radius relations using observational data from the .tar file available at the Arizona Neutron Stars website. The user, Tom, encountered difficulties due to the non-columnar format of the .dat files after extracting them with 7-ZIP. The data includes mass (in solar masses), radius (in kilometers), and posterior likelihood values from the study by Ozel et al. (2016). The conversation aims to seek assistance in formatting the data for effective plotting.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of neutron star mass-radius relations
  • Familiarity with data extraction from .tar files using 7-ZIP
  • Basic knowledge of data visualization techniques
  • Experience with handling .dat file formats
NEXT STEPS
  • Learn how to format .dat files for plotting in Python using libraries like Matplotlib
  • Research data preprocessing techniques for non-columnar datasets
  • Explore neutron star physics and the significance of mass-radius relations
  • Investigate alternative data visualization tools that can handle complex datasets
USEFUL FOR

Astronomers, astrophysicists, data scientists, and anyone involved in analyzing neutron star observational data will benefit from this discussion.

Hello everyone.
I'm currently working on NS mass relations and trying to plot a curve with predicted masses-radii and observations on NS.
There are some free data at this website: http://xtreme.as.arizona.edu/NeutronStars/index.php/neutron-star-radii/ . I downloaded the .tar file and tried to plot the .dat file. But the form of the file is not in columns and the plotting was not possible. Could you guys help me ?

Here are the first 15 (of the 22,506) lines in the file 'MRprob_1608.dat'. The .TAR file contains 14 .DAT files ranging in size from 102K to 878K. I'm on an old Windows machine and used the '7-ZIP' free software, https://www.7-zip.org to open the .TAR file.
