article is by Roger Highfield, science editor at the Telegraph

interesting article. some quotes from Lee Smolin. snapshots.
pretty nice as such things go.

==sample quote==
Lee Smolin at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, describes Lisi's work as "fabulous". "It is one of the most compelling unification models I've seen in many, many years," he says.

"Although he cultivates a bit of a surfer-guy image its clear he has put enormous effort and time into working the complexities of this structure out over several years," Prof Smolin tells The Telegraph.

"Some incredibly beautiful stuff falls out of Lisi's theory," adds David Ritz Finkelstein at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta. "This must be more than coincidence and he really is touching on something profound."

Physics news on Phys.org
the paper that is the source of all the excitement recently appeared 6 November
http://arxiv.org/abs/0711.0770
it was followed by a seminar talk yesterday 13 November posted at the ILQGS site:
http://relativity.phys.lsu.edu/ilqgs/

a movie of the known particle and force fields in their E8 formation, rotating slowly so you can see the formation from different angles, is here
http://deferentialgeometry.org/anim/e8rotation.mov

the seminar talk slides PDF at ILQGS:
http://relativity.phys.lsu.edu/ilqgs/lisi111307_2.pdf
Here is the direct link to the seminar audio in MP3 format
http://relativity.phys.lsu.edu/ilqgs/lisi111307.mp3
A less complete audio file in wav format, in case the other doesn't work on your computer.

a transcript of the 13 November ILQGS seminar talk is available either at G.L. website or here at PF

the New Scientist also has a G.L. story, dated 17 November, but only the first two paragraphs are free

the rest is subscribe or payperview.

I seem to notice a buildup of papers like this: Detecting single gravitons with quantum sensing. (OK, old one.) Toward graviton detection via photon-graviton quantum state conversion Is this akin to “we’re soon gonna put string theory to the test”, or are these legit? Mind, I’m not expecting anyone to read the papers and explain them to me, but if one of you educated people already have an opinion I’d like to hear it. If not please ignore me. EDIT: I strongly suspect it’s bunk but...
I'm trying to understand the relationship between the Higgs mechanism and the concept of inertia. The Higgs field gives fundamental particles their rest mass, but it doesn't seem to directly explain why a massive object resists acceleration (inertia). My question is: How does the Standard Model account for inertia? Is it simply taken as a given property of mass, or is there a deeper connection to the vacuum structure? Furthermore, how does the Higgs mechanism relate to broader concepts like...
