Online or Offline? Mystery of Posts Showing Wrong Status

AI Thread Summary
Users are experiencing discrepancies between their online status and post visibility, with some posts appearing as offline despite recent activity. Instances have been noted where members seem online one day but show as inactive the next. Additionally, a significant drop in post counts has been reported, with one member losing around 300 posts. These issues may be related to caching problems or a recount feature that recalibrates post counts. Overall, the inconsistencies raise concerns about the accuracy of online status and post tracking.

A lot of the time, I am online but I'll see posts that I have just made and they will say that I'm offline. I happened to make three separate posts in a row in a thread just now, and the first and third posts show me as offline, the second shows me as online. Weird.

Weird. I've also seen people online, but the next day their profile shows they haven't been online for days.

Another member's post count dropped by around 300 posts.

Could be some cache problems. The post count drop could have been because I did a post recount that recalculates some members post count numbers.

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
