Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around recommendations for resources, including books and websites, to learn about operational amplifiers (opamps). The scope includes theoretical understanding, practical applications, and introductory material.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests recommendations for books or websites about opamps.
  • Another participant suggests a book by Jiri Dostal (1993) for its rigorous content, noting it may not be suitable for casual readers and recommending borrowing it from a library.
  • A different participant mentions Walt Jung (2004) as a good resource for applications and suggests Horowitz and Hill (1989) for its relevant material on op-amps.
  • One participant highlights the value of datasheets, particularly mentioning National datasheets books as useful resources prior to the Internet.
  • Another participant reiterates the request for resources and recommends "The Art of Electronics" by Horowitz and Hill for its practical treatment of opamps, along with links to Wikipedia for additional information.
  • A final suggestion is made for "Design with Operational Amplifiers and Analog Integrated Circuits" by Sergio Franco as a preferred resource.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the value of various books and resources for learning about opamps, but there is no consensus on a single best resource, as multiple recommendations are provided.

Contextual Notes

Some recommendations depend on the reader's background and familiarity with the subject, as certain texts are noted to be rigorous or not for casual readers.

One of best book I've seen was by Jiri Dostal (1993). It is very rigorous and is not for the casual reader. But it has very clear explanations. The book is very expensive though (see amazon). Its best that you borrow a copy from your school's library before you invest.
Walt Jung (2004) is also good for applications. You can also use Horowitz and Hill (1989) which has some good material on op-amps.

Datasheets.
Before Internet, National datasheets books were nice, with lots of examples and explanations.

I like Design with Operational Amplifiers and Analog Integrated Circuits by Sergio Franco
