Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the orientation of an 8-pin integrated circuit (IC) that lacks a notch, which is typically used to determine pin alignment. Participants are exploring how to identify pin 1 based on alternative markings, specifically a dot on the IC's surface, and the implications of different manufacturing practices.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses confusion about the orientation of an 8-pin IC without a notch, noting that the schematic and datasheet reference a notch for orientation.
  • Another participant asserts that the dot on the IC generally indicates pin 1.
  • A different participant elaborates that pin numbers should be counted in a counter-clockwise direction from pin 1, placing pin 8 in the upper-right corner.
  • One participant suggests that the end with the dot corresponds to the end where the notch would typically be, speculating that a change in suppliers might have led to this variation.
  • Several participants confirm the identification of the dot as pin 1 and reiterate the counting method proposed by another participant.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

There is a general agreement among participants that the dot indicates pin 1, but there is some uncertainty regarding the reliability of this marking compared to the traditional notch method. The discussion reflects differing experiences and interpretations of IC orientation.

Contextual Notes

Participants mention the absence of a notch and the reliance on the dot, indicating potential limitations in the clarity of the schematic and the manufacturer's documentation.

Hello!

I have an 8-pin IC that does NOT have a notch in it, and I'm a bit confused on the orientation. The schematic I'm using specifies the orientation using a notch, as does the datasheet from the manufacturer. So, as you can see, I'm in a bit of a pickle. The chip does have a dot on the top surface, as indicated in the attached image (the chip text info orientation is preserved). However, since the schematic lacks this detail, this really doesn't help me. Plus, I've always used the notch, I don't even know if the dot/text is a reliable determinate of orientation.

Anyone know which way this goes? Thanks yall

The dot generally marks pin 1

The dot is pin 1. Count pin numbers up from pin 1 in a counter-clockwise fashion, so pin 8 is in the upper-right corner in your drawing.

The end with the little circle is the same end as the notch (in my experience). Why? They probably switched suppliers of the actual IC casing from the ones with the little circles to the ones with the little notch. Shouldn't really make a difference.

I believe that's y'all ;-)

Dot is pin 1. Count exactly like Berkeman said.

thanks y'all!
