SUMMARY

The discussion revolves around calculating the percentage of chromium consumed during a tanning process using 20g of Cr2(SO4)3 in an 800 ml batch. A 10ml sample was analyzed after the tanning process, where chromium was oxidized to dichromate and titrated with a 0.100 mol/L iron(II) solution. The titration required 16.5ml of the iron solution, which is essential for determining the moles of chromium that reacted. The key conclusion is that the percentage of chromium used can be calculated using the moles of Cr3+ derived from the titration results.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of stoichiometry in chemical reactions
  • Knowledge of titration techniques and calculations
  • Familiarity with chromium compounds, specifically Cr2(SO4)3
  • Basic principles of molarity and mole calculations
NEXT STEPS
  • Calculate moles of Cr3+ from the titration data using the formula: moles = concentration × volume
  • Determine the total moles of Cr3+ in the original 20g of Cr2(SO4)3
  • Calculate the percentage of chromium used in the tanning process using the formula: (moles of Cr3+ used / total moles of Cr3+) × 100
  • Review the principles of oxidation and reduction in the context of chromium chemistry
USEFUL FOR

Chemistry students, particularly those studying analytical chemistry and chemical engineering, as well as professionals involved in tanning processes and chromium compound applications.

Homework Statement

20g of Cr2(SO4)3 was used to make up an 800 ml batch of tanning liquor. When the tanning process was complete, a 10ml sample was taken and the chromium remaining in the sample was determined.
The chromium in the sample was oxidised to dichromate and then titrated with a 0.100molL solution of iron 2 ions.
Given that 16.5ml of the iron solution was needed, determine the percentage of the chromium used up in the tanning process

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

I am unsure as to how to get an answer, I get the number of moles of Cr3+ used in tanning but I don't know how to get a percentage of chromium.
