SUMMARY

To calculate the percentage by volume of propanol in a mixture of 500ml of water and 250ml of propanol, the total volume is typically considered as the sum of the two liquids, yielding 750ml. However, for precise calculations, one must consider the non-additive nature of liquid volumes and utilize partial molar volumes. For most applications, the simple addition of volumes suffices, but accuracy may require advanced methods.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic volume calculations
  • Familiarity with the concept of partial molar volumes
  • Knowledge of liquid mixtures and their properties
  • Basic principles of chemistry related to solutions
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the concept of partial molar volumes in detail
  • Learn about the properties of liquid mixtures and volume additivity
  • Explore methods for calculating volume percentages in solutions
  • Investigate the implications of non-ideal solutions in chemistry
USEFUL FOR

Chemistry students, laboratory technicians, and professionals involved in solution preparation and analysis.

if i had 500ml of water and added 250ml of propanol, how would I go about working out its percentage by volume?

thanks

What is the total volume?

It depends on what level of accuracy you need to work in. For many applications simply adding the volumes will yield an acceptable answer. However, volumes are not necessarily additive, and very precise work would use the partial molar volumes to determine such things.
