AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around a photo contest themed "A Place I Want To Go Back To," where participants are encouraged to submit digital or scanned photos of locations they wish to revisit, excluding family homes. Contest rules specify that only one photo per member is allowed, and submissions must adhere to size and editing guidelines. Participants share personal anecdotes about their chosen locations, highlighting the emotional connections tied to these places. Some discuss the challenges of capturing memories from pre-digital times and the nostalgia associated with past visits. Notable locations mentioned include Mount Katahdin and Serenity Bay at Disney's Castaway Cay, with participants reflecting on the beauty and dangers of hiking in these areas. The conversation also touches on changes to beloved places over time, emphasizing that the essence of a location can shift due to alterations in the environment or the absence of people who once shared those experiences.

Think of a place that you had visited in the past that you would like to go back to for another visit. A photo of such a place is what we have in mind for this contest.

Note that family homes (i.e. going back to your parents' home, for example), etc. do not qualify.

Zz.

Contest Rules:

1. Any digital photo or digitally-scanned photo relevant to the theme will be accepted within the contest period. In case there's a gray area, or you're not sure if the picture is suitable, check with me first.

2. Please resize your digital photo to no more than 800 x 600 or 600 x 800 pixels. You may also crop your picture if you wish. You are also allowed to adjust the brightness and contrast of your picture but these should not dramatically alter the look of the picture. But other than those, any form of picture editing or modification is not allowed. This is a photo contest, not a picture editing/special effect contest. You may add a watermark or your name/nickname to the photo for identification purposes.

3. Upload your photos to any of the photo servers such as imageshack or photobucket. Then post it the relevant contest thread and link your picture using the img command. PM me if you do not know how.

4. Only ONE picture per member per contest. Once a picture is posted, it cannot be changed other than a total withdrawl by that member from that week's photo contest. Exceptions will be made for modification to comply with the rules, such as resizing.

5. At the end of the contest period, I will open a poll and every PF member can vote for the picture they like best.

6. Note that in case we have a large number of entries, I will do the polling in more than one thread. If that's the case, you can vote in each of the polling threads. The photos will be assigned in the polling threads in the order they were submitted.

7. These pictures must be something that you took, not something taken off someone else's photo albums or taken by someone else. I have no way of checking if you did this, so we'll go by the honor system.

8. You can use a picture only once. Once it is used in a contest, it cannot be reused in another contest.

9. Please post only pictures meant for submission in this thread. Photos not meant for submission must not be posted in the contest thread. Posting of more than one photos by a member may result in an automatic disqualification from the week's contest.

This one is tough, since almost all my potential photos are pre-digital. Mostly, I realize how much easier it is to take a decent photo with digital cameras- any digital camera. Can I give a shout-out to my old Kodak Instamatic X-15F?

Gotta love that flash bank, yo!

Note that, per the rules, a scanned image of a photo that you took is acceptable.

As it happens, scanning did not work at all- can I submit a photo of the photo?

Hum... haven't thought of that. I suppose that's fine.

Looks like the web server that I put the picture on, is down. Some thunderstorms came through here last night. When I get down to the lab later this morning, I'll investigate.

[added]I just revived the server, so the pic should be back now.

My cousin and her husband on a rock outcropping on Mount Katahdin. With my crappy knees, I'm not likely to get back there.

A wonderful place to hike and climb. The trail between the two main peaks is very narrow with sheer sides. It's called the Knife-Edge. Deaths are not common, but are not met with surprise when reported. The trail is only about 3' wide for much of its length and has steep drops-offs on either side. People afraid of heights need not apply.

This is Serenity Bay at Disney's Castaway Cay in the Bahamas. And oh yes, I would love to go back to it!

Is that a Kodachrome pic?

Very likely. I was shooting a lot of KC back then. The greens are quite saturated. That is one of my favorite hikes ever. On that particular day, a ranger said that he would not allow us to hike the Knife-Edge unless we were all in good shape because T-storms were coming in. We did fine.

This shot was taken at an outcropping on the steepest approach, when we paused to take a break, get hydrated, and have a bit of food. It's not the prettiest mountain in the world, but it's the best Maine has to offer. I should mention that even though the mountain is not that rugged, hikers die with some regularity there. The Maine National Guard doesn't charge for helicopter evacuations, because they write them off as training missions, but LOTS of people need to have help getting off that little mountain. It's only a mile high, with the help of a small stone cairn, but there are lots of places where clambering and exertion are essential, and you can get hurt or killed if you don't have the skills.

In a way that's a sad thread. Places I would like to go back to don't exist anymore - as it is not only about coordinates, but also about people and spirit of the moment. One of the happiest memories I have is connected with the place I used to spent summers back in mid seventies (here). But it was not only about place, it was also about people - and most of them died many years ago. Place is still nice, I was there several years ago, but it looks different, has a new owner, old trees were cut down and where the meadows were there is a new young forest, blocking the view. I am not saying these are all changes to worse - but the place that I would love to see doesn't exist.

BTW, you can see a lot of little streaks on the mountainside in that pic. Those are not streams, but rock-falls. Best to stay far away from them if you're bushwacking because those rocks are quite loose and some of them are boulders - maybe 300-500# or more, and quite deadly if you disturb them. Stay on the established trails and pay attention and you'll be fine. The people that die on that mountain are often too old or out-of-shape to have attempted it, or too inexperienced to realize what they are dealing with.
