AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the prevalence of photo contests as sticky threads on the GD forum, with concerns raised about their necessity due to low participant engagement compared to other activities like quizzes. Despite the perception of limited interest, it was noted that current participation in the contests is relatively high, with 15 entries and over 30 voters. The images are hosted on third-party servers, alleviating bandwidth concerns for the forum. Additionally, there is enthusiasm for reviving quizzes, with plans for a new one to be created soon. Overall, the necessity and impact of photo contests on forum engagement remain debated.

Dear Friends,

Lately, i noticed a lot of Photo Contests appearing as a sticky in the GD forum. Now, if one looks at the number of views and the number of participants, i really wonder why these threads have to be stickies. I don't think they merit such "status" since only very few people actually care about the content. We have had quizzes in this forum that had much more participants yet they were never stickies.

Sometimes, but this is a question for the admins, i wonder whether this useless uploading of photo's does not slow down the forum. Is all of this really necessary ?

The images are not hosted by PF but by third-party servers like Imageshack - it's not our bandwith being wasted. The threads are presumably stickied because they must last several days, since they require PF'ers actually going out into the real world and finding objects to photograph. Participation is very high at this time - 15 entries and >30 voters.

Speaking of the quizzes, when are you going to create another one? You and gokul used to come up with some great ones.

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
