SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the observed kink in UV photoabsorption cross sections of various gases at wavelengths between 10-100 Angstrom. This kink indicates that the energy levels at these wavelengths are sufficient to initiate ionization processes. As the energy increases, more ionization mechanisms become available, leading to a greater number of steps in the absorption process. Understanding this phenomenon is crucial for applications in spectroscopy and atmospheric science.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of UV photoabsorption principles
  • Familiarity with ionization processes in gases
  • Knowledge of spectroscopy techniques
  • Basic concepts of wavelength and energy relationships
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the mechanisms of ionization in gases at different energy levels
  • Explore UV spectroscopy techniques and their applications
  • Study the relationship between wavelength and energy in photon interactions
  • Investigate the impact of different gases on UV photoabsorption cross sections
USEFUL FOR

Researchers in atmospheric science, physicists studying ionization processes, and professionals working with UV spectroscopy will benefit from this discussion.

If we look into the UV photoabsorption cross sections of different gases, a kink in the cross section is seen at wavelength between 10-100 Angstrom. Can some one explain why this happens ?

This typically means the energy is sufficient for some ionization process for wavelengths smaller than the kink location.
You get more of th se steps for higher energies when more ionization processes become possible. Here is an example .
