Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the uses of plane polarizing light, with participants exploring its applications in various fields such as cinema, navigation, and scientific instruments. The conversation touches on both theoretical and practical aspects of polarized light.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions the terminology, suggesting that "linearly polarized light" is more commonly used than "plane polarized light."
  • Another participant notes that "plane polarization" can be synonymous with "linear polarization" and suggests searching for "polarized light" for more information on its uses.
  • 3D movies are mentioned as a significant application of polarized light.
  • A participant recalls a catalogue from the Polaroid Corporation listing numerous uses for polarized light, including polarimeters and stress analysis.
  • Another participant elaborates on the use of circular polarization in 3D movies, explaining its advantages over linear polarization for viewer comfort.
  • Some birds are noted to use polarized skylight for navigation, referencing a study on the topic.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the terminology used for polarized light, with no consensus reached on the preferred terminology. Multiple applications of polarized light are acknowledged, but the discussion remains open-ended regarding the full extent of its uses.

Contextual Notes

The discussion includes varying interpretations of terminology related to polarized light, and there are references to specific applications without detailed exploration of the underlying principles or mechanisms.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in optics, photography, cinema technology, animal behavior, and scientific instrumentation may find this discussion relevant.

what is the use of plane polarizing light?

Do you mean linearly polarized light? I have never heard of 'plane polarized' light, other than perhaps in the context of s- and p- polarization states.

Sometimes "plane polarization" is used as a synonym for "linear polarization." See for example

As for its uses, you might try a Google search on "polarized light." Usually when people talk about polarized light, they're talking about linear / plane polarization.

3D movies.

Years ago I looked at a catalogue published by the polaroid corporation(polaroid is /was a trade name and I don't think it's used in polaroid cameras which were made by the same company)and my memory is vague on this but I think there were dozens of uses of polaroid listed.Polarimeters and stress analysis come immediately to mind.

For some while they have been using clockwise and anticlockwise circular polarisation for left and right stereo channels. Doing it this way avoids the necessity of holding your head perfectly level in order just to see the left channel with left eye and the right channel with the right eye - which is the problem with linear polarisation.
