Practicing the Scientific Method in Middle School

AI Thread Summary
The website in question provides a list of science projects that may not be specifically curated for teaching the scientific method but still offers some useful options for middle school physics, such as the vertical spring-mass system. However, the list is considered outdated, as modern phone apps now facilitate data gathering, enabling students to concentrate more on hypothesis formulation and testing methodologies. Overall, while the website has potential for inspiration, it lacks a strong focus on the scientific method.

Are any of these projects appropriate to practice the Scientific Method ?

  • Yes, many

  • Yes, a few

  • Not at all

I answered "Yes, a few" with reservations. This list of projects is not curated for teaching the scientific method. Nevertheless, a teacher looking for inspiration will find a few that can be used, e.g. the vertical spring-mass system.

I would also consider this list outdated. A lot of phone apps out there make data-gathering convenient. This allows students to focus on formulating a hypothesis and how to proceed in order to test it.

Sequences and series are related concepts, but they differ extremely from one another. I believe that students in integral calculus often confuse them. Part of the problem is that: Sequences are usually taught only briefly before moving on to series. The definition of a series involves two related sequences (terms and partial sums). Both have operations that take in a sequence and output a number (the limit or the sum). Both have convergence tests for convergence (monotone convergence and...
Hi all, I am in the process of adding physics to my teachable subjects, and I have a project due soon where I have been asked to improve upon a Leaving Certificate Physics experiment. The only thing is I haven't actually taught physics yet, and was wondering if any teachers could share their thoughts on the experiments and any challenges you have faced or any improvements you would like to see made to the experiments.
