Quantum Computing: Deciding Between Physics & CS

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the career decision between studying Physics and Computer Science for a future in Quantum Computing. Participants unanimously agree that a foundational understanding of Physics is essential, as Quantum Computing relies heavily on quantum theory. While both fields are important, starting with Physics provides the necessary theoretical background to grasp the complexities of quantum systems. The consensus is that programming quantum computers diverges significantly from traditional computer programming.

PREREQUISITES
  • Quantum Theory Fundamentals
  • Basic Programming Concepts
  • Understanding of Quantum Mechanics
  • Familiarity with Quantum Computing Principles
NEXT STEPS
  • Research Quantum Mechanics and its applications in computing
  • Explore Quantum Computing frameworks like Qiskit
  • Study the differences between classical and quantum algorithms
  • Learn about Quantum Information Theory
USEFUL FOR

Students and professionals considering a career in Quantum Computing, particularly those weighing the merits of Physics versus Computer Science as their primary field of study.

Hey guys,
I´m really interested in Quantum Computers and i´d love to work on them. I´ll have to decide my carreer soon, and i wanted to know what should i study, either Physics or Computer Science? I know that eventually I´ll have to study both...but what makes more sense to you guys?. Thanks!

As I studied physics myself, my view may be a bit biased, but I think physics is a better field to begin. Working with the first concepts of quantum computers will require a lot of quantum theory, and "programming" them is a physics task completely different from regular computers, too.

I think this belongs to the Career Guidance forum.

You would want to study physics. Quantum computers work very differently than computers covered in computer science, it's an entirely different idea.
