Quick simple indentity explanation needed

In summary, when trying to use the Pythagorean Theorem identity to prove an identity, it is not valid to use it on the third term in the parenthesis. To verify this, you can cube and square sin(x)^2 + cos(x)^2 = 1 and check. Additionally, in proving identities, it is important to rewrite expressions using the properties of exponents to make the proof easier.

Homework Statement

When you have something like
eq.gif

and you want to use the pythagorean's theorem identity but let's say i do it with the 3rd term in the parenthesis, then would this be valid
eq.gif

and what about this

Heh, my students just learned proving identities, and they've been kicking them in the ***...
[tex]sin^{5}x cos^{2}x = (cos^{2}x - 2cos^{4}x + cos^{6}x)sin x[/tex]
You do want to use the Pythagorean identity, but not in the first step. You can also start on either side, but I did from the left.

If you start from the left side, my hint would be to rewrite [tex]sin^{5}x cos^{2}x[/tex] using the properties of exponents so that it equals (everything else) times sin x.

1. What is identity?

Identity refers to the characteristics, traits, and qualities that make a person or thing distinct and unique from others. It includes physical, psychological, and social aspects such as name, appearance, personality, beliefs, and relationships.

2. How is identity formed?

Identity formation is a complex process that is influenced by various factors such as genetics, environment, culture, and experiences. It starts from the moment we are born and continues to evolve throughout our lives as we encounter new situations and interactions.

3. Can identity change?

Yes, identity is not fixed and can change over time. It can be influenced by personal experiences, relationships, and external factors. Some changes may be gradual, while others may occur suddenly due to significant life events or personal choices.

4. What is the role of identity in society?

Identity plays a crucial role in society as it helps individuals understand their place and purpose in the world. It also influences how we interact with others, form relationships, and navigate social norms and expectations.

5. How does identity impact behavior and decision-making?

Identity can significantly influence behavior and decision-making as it shapes our beliefs, values, and perspectives. It can also impact how we perceive and respond to different situations, leading to different choices and actions.
