There was method in the madness. Einstein came to Manchester in 1921 to give a lecture on Relativity and the University gave him an honorary doctorate. He posed for photos somewhere here. He also went to the Whitehouse and posed with the president, W.G Harding the same year, so the images I found on line said Manchester but the guy in the image with Einstein looks like Harding. It's not worth a thread but I will post some of the images here from work tomorrow, plenty of Einstein buffs on PF!

Here somewhere?

My search suggests it Harding with Einstein in the US 1921 not Manchester. Never mind.

This week's round of pics. As usual, of all the pics I consider "keepers" of the week, only an appropriate subset are shown here.

Figure 3. <Untitled> Leica 35mm Summilux-M ASPH. I've included this one here on PF to show off the lens. It's a significant crop. I was a fair distance away and took this one with just 35 mm focal length. I had to crop way in, but the detail is still there. The rangefinder mechanism was used for manual focus (the setup I was using only supports manual focus). The lens shows some chromatic aberration (you can see some green or purple fringing [green in this case] in high contrast areas), but other than that I'm very impressed with the setup.

This week's batch of pics. This week I constrained myself to only shooting with a 50 mm lens. All pictures in this post (and the next) were taken with a Leica 50 mm Summilux-M ASPH.

The first was taken last Wednesday at Balboa Park (See Fig. 1).

L1008985_PS_edit.webp

Figure 1. "Girl running around perimeter of Bea Evenson Fountain."

Now on to the usual limited protest pics. I find that 50 mm focal length isn't always (or even usually) the best lens choice for crowds. (Slightly wider may be better -- more on that in coming weeks.) I placed this artificial constraint on myself this week as an exercise for improvement: To temporarily push myself out of my comfort zone sort of thing. So (as previously mentioned) all photos here are taken with the 50 mm.

I think something was going on behind me when I took the photo in Fig. 5. 'Nothing crazy, but just something to briefly draw people's eye. I wasn't paying attention. Whatever it was, it did create the workings for what I consider a slightly striking/unusual image.

Before you ask, I have no idea what was in the box (See Fig. 6). I didn't even notice a box until later when I opened the images for post processing on the computer.

This weekend I've been in Knoxville TN for a stamp show. On Saturday I drove up to Oak Ridge to see stuff that I missed on my previous visit two years ago.

Here's the former Guest House that was used for Manhattan Project visitors, including Bohr, Oppenheimer and Fermi ("Mr. Farmer"). It became a hotel, the Alexander Inn, which closed in the 1990s. In 2015 it re-opened as a senior living facility (assisted living and memory care), after conversion by a private developer.

I thought that was a British word. Mancunian even. Never heard that outside of Manchester.

It's definitely broader than Mancunian - I know it as a Yorkshireman, and a Glaswegian friend uses it when in more-or-less polite company where her usual language is contraindicated.
