I just posted this in the Artemis II thread on PF, but I want to post it here too because it's such a cool photo :

This week's batch of photos.

From last Wednesday's Balboa Park trip:

Figure 1. <Untitled> I think the people in the photo were gathered for a formal occasion. A wedding probably.

Figure 2. <Untitled> The natural light was remarkable for portrait shots at this moment.

Figure 3. "Apartment building near my bus transfer stop." The architecture gives the illusion that the camera is looking down from an angle. But it's actually looking up. I was on the sidewalk across the street when taking the photo. The lowest floor in the photo is roughly around the 5th floor. I was at street level.

Moving on to Thursday for my weekly thing downtown. This week involved folklórico dancers, in part.

... Continued from last post.

I was shooting wide open at f/1.4 with the 50mm Summilux-M ASPH for these shots. She [the puppy] was moving around a lot making it especially difficult to achieve focus (manual focus). I'm pleased with myself for getting the shots that I did.

No Balboa Park pics this week, but I did take the trolley downtown for my weekly thing there. Here are a few select pics.

L1002553.webp

Figure 1. "Trolley reflection study #6"

I wasn't the only one with a camera there that day (See figs. 2,3). It's always good to see other photographers. Always carry a camera with you, I say.

L1002627.webp

Figure 2. <Untitled> All three people to the left had cameras with them (one of the cameras is out of view).

L1002634.webp

Figure 3. <Untitled> 'Not sure if the writing on her sleeve was purple due to it possibly being purple or due to chromatic aberrations of my 50mm Summilux-M ASPH being shot wide open. Not sure. I love the lens, but apochromatic it is not.

Figure 8. "California Theatre building." I think I liked the lighting better the last time. This time I used a 28mm Summicron-M (wider angle than before). I'll try to come back another time for different lighting and lens combinations.

The place where I often go to get lunch near the California Theatre building was closed for the afternoon (private event). So I wandered off to find lunch elsewhere.

Figure 9. "Courthouse and trolley."

I settled on a bagel place near the Hall of Justice and Santa Fe Station for lunch (no picture shown). It was fine.

Experimental photos using a modified vintage Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 lens (front element reversed), which can give quite unusual and special renderings of scenes (not always interesting, but sometimes very interesting )...

Beer (1).webp

1. A non-alcoholic beer at a resturant.
The beer brand is the Danish Carlsberg; their beers are often great.

MFF (1).webp

2. The logo of the local football club, Malmö FF,
painted on the wall of the restaurant.

Gatufotografi (1).webp

3. A woman and her dog (street photography).

Cherry blossom (1).webp

4. Cherry blossom.
I personally find these types of photos taken with a modified Helios lens to be more interesting, as the backgrounds tend to get quite unusual and artistic. You simply can't get photos quite like these from any other lens than a modified Helios 44 (at least as far as I know).

Siberian squill (1).webp

5. Siberian squill.
And the trick how to get these kind of strange backgrounds with a modified Helios lens, is to find backgrounds that are reasonably complex and have a lot of light variation in them, e.g. many small bright parts and many small dark parts. The background at the top of the photo is basically trees with a blue sky behind them.

Striped Squill (1).webp

6. Striped squill in the park.
