For simulating a Gaussian beam in a bow tie cavity, Winlens Basic from Qioptiq is recommended as a good free ray tracing simulator. Users may need to hard-code astigmatism from tilted mirrors into the simulation. Understanding the focal length shift is crucial for accurate ray tracing. There is no specific simulation platform designed exclusively for cavities. This information should assist in achieving the desired simulation results.

Hello! Is there any good free ray tracing simulator? I just want to simulate the behavior of a Gaussian beam in a simple bow tie cavity. Thank you!
I don't believe there is any simulation platform that was made with cavities in mind. If you want a good free ray tracing simulator, try Winlens Basic from Qioptiq. I think you will need to hard-code the astigmatism from the tilted mirrors into the simulation, but if you know the focal length shift then the ray tracing should work just fine. Hope that helps!
I have included the resulting histogram that emerges when I do this procedure and it does not look as expected. I am using CASTEP and have read the .bands file as a txt file into python where i have extracted the relevant data.
