Reading material for Physics Undergrad Student

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

For physics undergraduates, essential reading materials include "The Feynman Lectures on Physics," "Fundamental University Physics" by Alonso and Finn (original three volumes), and "Spacetime Physics" by Taylor and Wheeler. The "little QM book" by PCW Davies is recommended, with a specific link provided to avoid the expanded version. For those interested in particle physics, "The Quantum Frontier" by Don Lincoln is also suggested as a valuable resource.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Calculus
  • Familiarity with Newtonian Mechanics
  • Basic knowledge of Quantum Mechanics
  • Interest in Special Relativity
NEXT STEPS
  • Research "The Feynman Lectures on Physics" for foundational concepts
  • Study "Fundamental University Physics" for in-depth mechanics and waves
  • Explore "Spacetime Physics" for insights into Special Relativity
  • Investigate "The Quantum Frontier" for contemporary particle physics
USEFUL FOR

Physics undergraduates, aspiring physicists, and anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of fundamental physics concepts and theories.

Hi, I'll be starting a physics major in the fall at university.
I was wondering, is there any good reading material I can get my hands on so I can start learning now?

Thanks.

Physics news on Phys.org
The Feynman Lectures on Physics
Old editions of Halliday & Resnick, Physics
French, Newtonian Mechanics

If you have a good handle on Calculus no other introduction to physics will be as challenging and rewarding as "Fundamental University Physics by Alonso Finn". There's an updated and watered down version that squeezes the original three volumes into one book, which totally sacrifices depth for brevity. So I suggest you find the original versions.

Fundamental University Physics, Vol. I - Mechanics
Fundamental University Physics, Vol. II - Fields and Waves
Fundamental University Physics, Vol. III - Quantum and Statistical Physics

hi..i am in second year of BSc(physics honors). i wanted your help. please suggest me some good reading material to understand thoroughly. waiting for your earliest reply..

"Spacetime Physics" was a great book about Special Relativity.

The Quantum Frontier, by Don Lincoln

Great book about Particle Physics, the research frontier and the Large Hadron Collider!

...and of course, the Feynman Lectures on Physics.

The little QM book by PCW Davies. Make sure you get https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0710099622/?tag=pfamazon01-20, not the expanded version.

Daverz,
what's wrong with the newest edition of this book?
Thanks.

Mainly the price for such a slim book. But I see there are some cheaper used copies now. I haven't seen this edition, though.

well, thank you for your valuable suggestions. But i want to know on mechanics and differential calculus as required by an undergraduate student.
also, i am from India, have you ever heard of some Indian author book in physics?
