AI Thread Summary
Session loss occurs in vBulletin when links are not created correctly, often due to inconsistencies between URLs like www.physicsforums.com and physicsforums.com. Users can lose their session if they sign in under one URL and then navigate to the other. Best practices suggest always using the www prefix to avoid cookie handling issues, as cookies are assigned to specific domains. The problem can also arise from external links, causing session loss when navigating from other websites. Addressing link creation and cookie management is essential to prevent these issues.

Well, the topic really says the problem. In vBulletin I know if you don't create your links a certain way, the session will be lost. It's been a really long time since I've worked with it so sorry I can't give any specifics on how to fix. It's very simple though, as far as I can remember, so probably looking at any other link would instantly show. I believe there's built-in functions for creating links so that sessions don't get lost.

Physics news on Phys.org
Can you be a little bit more specific? I guess you may be referring to the difference between addresses given as www.physicsforums.com and physicsforums.com, but I am not sure.

I think you have it borek. If you sign in under one of them then use a link to the other you won't be signed in any more. Its always best practice to include the www.

It is because of the way cookies are handled, they are assigned to the domain.

I opened this page both ways to check how firefox handles the cookies. Looks like both sets get stored under the same physicsforums.com heading.

Well it happens whenever I, say, click a link from google or somebody else links to another page from either this forum or somewhere else on the internet. I'm not sure why, and I suppose that outside links can't be helped, but it does happen with links on these forums as well.

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
