Smartphone and the type of wave?

Click For Summary

Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around the type of wave received by a smartphone when a person speaks into it, exploring concepts related to sound waves and radio waves.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants consider whether the smartphone receives longitudinal waves or radio waves, questioning the nature of the waves involved in communication through a smartphone.

Discussion Status

Some participants have provided insights about sound waves being longitudinal and radio waves being transverse, while others are seeking clarification on the distinctions between these concepts. There is an ongoing exploration of how these waves relate to the devices mentioned.

Contextual Notes

Participants are discussing the implications of a scenario involving multiple devices receiving signals, which may influence their understanding of wave types in this context.

A longitudinal wave of what?

Or does the smartphone receive radio waves?
Do you "speak" with radio waves?

Note that those two things belong to completely different concepts.

Dear Sir, thank you for the reply and clarification.

The actual question is as follows:
David switched on his television set and radio. As he was resting, he received a phone on his smartphone. He picked it up and began talking over the phone.
In the above situation, how many of the devices are receiving signals in longitudinal wave?

Could you please kindly help me with the question?

Sure. What did you find out so far?

I found out that sound waves are longitudinal waves; radio waves are transverse waves.

My thinking is that as the boy speaks into the phone, sound waves are transmitted into the phone.

So my guess is that the phone is receiving longitudinal waves?
