Hello, wondering if anyone can confirm if 7% Sodium Hypochlorite and alkyl benzene sulfonic acid are compatible to mix together? Any concerns or reactions to be aware of?
The discussion revolves around the compatibility and potential reactions between 7% Sodium Hypochlorite and alkyl benzene sulfonic acid. Participants explore concerns regarding chemical interactions, safety, and possible byproducts when these substances are mixed.
Participants express differing views on the safety and compatibility of mixing sodium hypochlorite with alkyl benzene sulfonic acid. There is no consensus, as some believe it is safe while others highlight significant risks.
Participants reference the pH levels and the potential for gas production without providing definitive conclusions on the exact reactions or safety measures required. The discussion includes varying levels of concern and assumptions about the chemical properties involved.

Possibly a big problem. Something like tosyl acid (pKa < 0) is acidic enough that, mixed in excess with hypochlorite, can shift the pH to < 7, producing chlorine gas. I recommend a fume hood if this reaction is unavoidable..Scott said:Bleach and detergent - not a problem.
Or dichlorine monoxide - remember that getting chlorine from hypochlorite requires reducer. But dichlorine monoxide is also poisonous and irritating.TeethWhitener said:Possibly a big problem.
