SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the need for software capable of modeling ground grid performance during faults, specifically due to lightning strikes. The HIFREQ software module from SES Technologies is identified as a leading tool for this purpose, but its educational license costs exceed $1,000, making it unaffordable for university projects. Participants are seeking open-source alternatives or low-cost educational licenses to facilitate their modeling efforts. Relevant research papers utilizing MATLAB for similar modeling are also referenced for further insights.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of ground grid performance analysis
  • Familiarity with lightning strike fault modeling
  • Knowledge of HIFREQ software capabilities
  • Basic proficiency in MATLAB for modeling purposes
NEXT STEPS
  • Research open-source alternatives to HIFREQ for ground grid modeling
  • Explore educational licensing options for software under $1,000
  • Study MATLAB modeling techniques as outlined in the referenced papers
  • Investigate additional software tools for electrical fault analysis
USEFUL FOR

Electrical engineers, university students in electrical engineering programs, and researchers focused on ground grid performance and fault analysis will benefit from this discussion.

For a University project I need to somehow model the effective performance of a ground grid in the event of a fault caused by a lightning strike. We would need to prepare different test cases for different sizes and grid configurations in order to carry out different analysis and find the optimal performance point. So far the only software that I know that is capable of carrying out these computations is the HIFREQ software module from SES Technologies. However, the cost of an educational license is way beyond our budget. Does anyone know of any alternatives that are open-source software or have very cheap educational licenses (below $1k per license)? Any help is appreciated.
