SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating the speed of an electron released from rest in an electric field created by two stationary positive point charges, specifically charge 1 with a magnitude of 3.75 and charge 2 with a magnitude of 1.95, separated by 30.0 units. The electron's speed is determined using the kinetic energy (KE) and potential energy (U) relationship, expressed as 1/2mv² = -kQ₁q₂/r. The user successfully resolves their confusion regarding the calculation method after community input.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of electric fields and forces
  • Familiarity with kinetic energy and potential energy equations
  • Knowledge of Coulomb's law and constants (k)
  • Basic principles of motion in physics
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the application of Coulomb's law in electric fields
  • Learn about energy conservation in electric fields
  • Explore the concept of electric potential energy
  • Investigate the motion of charged particles in electric fields

Two stationary positive point charges, charge 1 of magnitude 3.75 and charge 2 of magnitude 1.95 , are separated by a distance of 30.0 . An electron is released from rest at the point midway between the two charges, and it moves along the line connecting the two charges.

What is the speed of the electron when it is 10.0 from charge 1?
Express your answer in meters per second.

so i have KE = - U
which is

1/2mv^2 = - k Q_1q_2 / r

but then i am confused where should i calculate from?
