SUMMARY

Lactation can occur in females even if the baby is stillborn. Induction and relactation are key processes that facilitate milk production regardless of the infant's status. The concept of "milk supplied on demand" emphasizes that if milk is not utilized, production will cease. Therefore, lactation is independent of the birthing process.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of lactation physiology
  • Knowledge of induction and relactation techniques
  • Familiarity with the concept of "supply and demand" in milk production
  • Awareness of wet-nursing practices
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the physiological mechanisms of lactation
  • Explore techniques for inducing lactation in non-birthing mothers
  • Study the process of relactation after a period of non-lactation
  • Investigate the role and history of wet-nursing in infant care
USEFUL FOR

Healthcare professionals, lactation consultants, and individuals interested in maternal health and lactation practices.

Does lactation take place in females if the baby is still born?

Yes. Birthing is not essential. See induction and relactation. See wet-nurse.

My professor puts lactation in a nice way, he says milk is 'supplied on demand'. What it means is if the milk produced is not used up, then the production would stop. So lactation can still take place without the infant.
