Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around survival skills in a scenario where the power goes out, focusing on the practicalities of milking cows, skinning rabbits, and the broader implications of food sourcing and preservation in such a situation. Participants explore various methods of obtaining and processing food, including hunting, fishing, and foraging, as well as the challenges faced in urban environments.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants share personal experiences with skinning and cooking rabbits, suggesting that catching them may not be overly difficult.
  • Others express uncertainty about their ability to handle larger animals like cows and pigs, questioning the procedures involved in slaughtering them.
  • There are discussions about the necessity of preserving meat, with suggestions that salt and smoking could be effective methods.
  • Some participants highlight the potential challenges of urban survival, noting that city dwellers may face significant difficulties in accessing food without power.
  • Concerns are raised about the societal implications of a widespread power outage, including panic buying and the potential for conflict over resources.
  • Participants discuss the importance of knowledge and preparation for food preservation and survival techniques, with some expressing doubt about their own capabilities.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

There is no clear consensus among participants. While some share practical skills and knowledge, others express skepticism about their ability to survive in a power outage scenario, particularly in urban settings. Multiple competing views exist regarding the feasibility of sourcing and preserving food.

Contextual Notes

Participants mention various assumptions, such as the extent of the power outage and the availability of resources. The discussion reflects a range of experiences and knowledge levels, with some participants relying on theoretical knowledge while others draw from personal experience.

Who May Find This Useful

This discussion may be of interest to individuals concerned with survival skills, food preservation techniques, and the implications of urban living in emergency situations.

I think if the grid went off for an extended period of time, food would be the least of your concerns. Everyone else is hungry too, when people get low on resources, they get violent.

Me personally? Yes, I know how to hunt, trap, and clean an animal as well as how to start a fire with a friction drill. I'm also not picky and know that in a pinch, dog food is eatable, certain plants that live where I do can be eaten. Squirrels and geese are common around here. I also know how to fish.

In the absolute worst case: an true apocalypse, the society has broken down to it's most animal level, and my family is starving, I'd like to think that I wouldn't, but in the moment I think I'd make the decision to hunt down another human for their supplies (and they themselves are eatable.)

I have thought about taking from others as a last resort. The big question is; Will others have anything to take?

I would imagine the rich would keep the black market stuff for them self's, but as money would not mean any thing they would have to pay with possessions.
