question.

One of my HW problems asks the following after you solve it.

Tell if the impedance is complex inductive, capactive, or real resistive.

I said if my answer is of the form, R + 0j it is Real Resistive,

if it is R + N j it is complex Inductive

if it is R - Nj it is complex capacitive.

I said the minus sign on the complex makes it capactive. Is this correct?

I think it is just a convention. The convention is to express the reactance as positive if voltage leads current (inductive) and negative if voltage lags current (capacitive). So you are right.
