Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around methods to make a metal positively charged, exploring various techniques and considerations related to this process. Participants inquire about both physical and chemical methods, as well as the feasibility of achieving positive charge on a large scale.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks about different methods to make a metal positively charged.
  • Another participant references the use of an electroscope and mentions a Van de Graaff generator as a related concept.
  • A participant suggests that making a metal positively charged on a large scale may be challenging.
  • One participant proposes isolating the metal from ground and shining light with photon energy greater than its work function as a method to achieve positive charge.
  • There is a suggestion that chemical methods, such as batteries, could be used to make a metal positively charged.
  • Another participant emphasizes the importance of providing complete information when asking questions to facilitate better responses.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the methods available for making a metal positively charged, with no consensus reached on the best approach or the feasibility of large-scale applications.

Contextual Notes

Some methods discussed depend on specific conditions, such as the work function of the metal and the isolation from ground, which may not be universally applicable. The discussion also highlights the need for clarity in questions posed by participants.

When was the last time you played with an electroscope?

Many years. I'm no longer allowed to touch things more delicate than myself. :(

Take a look at a Van de Graf generator too.

played long back but in that i guess we can't make a metal positively charged in a huge extent

is there any method to make a metal positively charged easily in a large scale

Isolate the metal from ground, and shine a light with photon energy larger than its work function. Viola! You have a metal that is positively charged!

is there any chemical methods

I believe we call them batteries.

Next time, when you post a question, try to present it in as complete of a manner as possible. I still don't think you're telling the whole story here, and the quickest way to annoy members who are trying to help is to give them only bits and pieces of information as you go along.
