Two Dogs and a Tire: A Physics Experiment

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers around a physics experiment involving three dogs pulling on a tire. The first dog exerts a force of 220N, while the second dog pulls with a force of 230N at an angle of 137 degrees relative to the first dog. To determine the force exerted by the third dog, participants calculated the resultant force of the two initial dogs, which is necessary to bring the tire to a standstill. This calculation utilizes the principles of vector addition in physics.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of vector addition in physics
  • Familiarity with Newton's second law (F=MA)
  • Basic knowledge of forces and angles
  • Ability to perform calculations involving trigonometry
NEXT STEPS
  • Learn how to calculate the resultant force of two vectors using the law of cosines
  • Study the principles of static equilibrium in physics
  • Explore vector decomposition and its applications in force analysis
  • Investigate real-world applications of force vectors in engineering
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, educators teaching force dynamics, and anyone interested in practical applications of vector forces in real-life scenarios.

1. Two dogs, separate by 137 degree of arc, grab a tire and pull simultaneously. The first dog pulls with a force of 220N. The second dog pulls with a force of 230N. A third dog joins in on the fun and grabs the tire as well, pulling just enough to bring thee other 2 dogs and the tire to a standstill.

1. Relative to the pit bull, where is the 3rd dog?

2. With how much force is the 3rd dog pulling the tire?

2. F=MA

Nevermind, got it.

Find the resultant of two forces 220 N and 230 N with an angle 137 degree with each other. That will be the pulling force of the third dog.
