Vector Analysis using Graphical and Analytical

AI Thread Summary
The discussion focuses on solving vector analysis problems involving displacement using both graphical and analytical methods. Participants are tasked with calculating the net displacement of a hot air balloon and a car, incorporating trigonometric functions like sine, cosine, and tangent. The graphical method requires accurately sketching the vectors based on their magnitudes and directions. The analytical method involves applying trigonometric functions to find the resultant displacement. Clear diagrams and accurate calculations are essential for both methods to achieve correct results.

1.a A hot air balloon drifts 12km in a direction 70 degrees South of East. An abrupt charge in air movement then comes the balloon 8.0km in a direction 40 degrees South of West. Estimate the record displacement from the starting position after the two drifts. (magnitude & displacement)

1.b A car travels 200 km west, 100km at an angle 60 degrees South of East. What is the net displacement of the car?

2. I will use graphical and for the analytical method, i will use trigonometric function.

3. trigonometric functions-sine, cosine & tangent

Please help me on how to graph it and how to solve for the analytical method. Thanks!

Hi zbam and welcome to the forums,

Do you have no idea at all of how to start these problems?

thanks, I have no idea, the graphical method is easy but I forgot it.

Okay, the graphical method and the analytical method are very similar (except you need to be more accurate in you sketch for the graphical method). Start by drawing a diagram of what is happening, draw the two drifts as vectors, noting their magnitude as direction.

I multiplied the values first without the error limit. Got 19.38. rounded it off to 2 significant figures since the given data has 2 significant figures. So = 19. For error I used the above formula. It comes out about 1.48. Now my question is. Should I write the answer as 19±1.5 (rounding 1.48 to 2 significant figures) OR should I write it as 19±1. So in short, should the error have same number of significant figures as the mean value or should it have the same number of decimal places as...
Thread 'A cylinder connected to a hanging mass'
Let's declare that for the cylinder, mass = M = 10 kg Radius = R = 4 m For the wall and the floor, Friction coeff = ##\mu## = 0.5 For the hanging mass, mass = m = 11 kg First, we divide the force according to their respective plane (x and y thing, correct me if I'm wrong) and according to which, cylinder or the hanging mass, they're working on. Force on the hanging mass $$mg - T = ma$$ Force(Cylinder) on y $$N_f + f_w - Mg = 0$$ Force(Cylinder) on x $$T + f_f - N_w = Ma$$ There's also...
