A Velocity Dispersion: Meaning & Difference Explained

AI Thread Summary
Velocity dispersion in galaxies refers to the range of velocities of stars or gas within a galaxy, indicating how spread out their speeds are. Stellar velocity dispersion pertains to the velocities of stars, while molecular velocity dispersion relates to the motion of gas molecules. The difference between the two lies in their constituents; stellar dispersion involves stars, whereas molecular dispersion focuses on gas dynamics. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for studying galaxy dynamics and formation. The discussion emphasizes the need for further reading and specific inquiries to clarify these concepts.

Welcome to the PF.

Please post links to the reading you have been doing about those terms, and then ask specific questions about that reading if you are having trouble understanding something in your links.

In this paper the author mentioned " the ratio of stellar to gas velocity dispersion "
I understand from that there are two types of velocity dispersion , am I right? if so what is the different between them?

TL;DR Summary: In 3 years, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope (or rather, a system of telescopes) should be put into operation. In case of failure to detect alien signals, it will further expand the radius of the so-called silence (or rather, radio silence) of the Universe. Is there any sense in this or is blissful ignorance better? In 3 years, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope (or rather, a system of telescopes) should be put into operation.
