What are the Benefits of Engaging in Scientific Study and Self-Education?

Hi.

Been reading this forum for several years.
Sometimes i feel compulsion to add to some discussions here, why not register today.

Engineer, automation, ~12 years in the field.

I firmly believe that scientific method and critical thinking is the only path to survival of humanity.
Part of my entertainment is studying science/tech and self-education.
My best math is basic calculus, so i do not consider myself a scientist (:

Interests: physics, cosmology, psychology. Waiting for optronics and augmented reality commercial availability.

Books ... last one was Peter Hamilton's series, enjoyed it quite a lot.
