SUMMARY

A coupling described as 6.35 mm x 12 mm indicates that the inner diameter (ID) is 6.35 mm, which corresponds to a 1/4" shaft size. The outer diameter (OD) is 12 mm, which is the size of the shaft on the opposing side designed for attachment. The dimensions are critical for ensuring compatibility between shafts in mechanical applications. The type of coupling may influence whether these dimensions are interpreted as ID x OD.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of mechanical coupling types
  • Knowledge of shaft dimensions and tolerances
  • Familiarity with metric and imperial measurement conversions
  • Basic principles of mechanical engineering
NEXT STEPS
  • Research different types of mechanical couplings and their applications
  • Learn about shaft tolerances and their importance in coupling design
  • Explore metric to imperial conversion techniques for engineering
  • Investigate the specifications and selection criteria for couplings
USEFUL FOR

Mechanical engineers, design engineers, and anyone involved in the selection and application of shaft couplings in machinery.

When a coupling is described as being 6.35 mm x 12 mm, what does this mean?

I figure that 6.35 mm is the shaft diameter it accepts because that diameter equals 1/4". Is 12 mm the size of shaft the opposing side is designed to attach to?

Thank you in advance.
